The Iowa Drug Card team had a recent opportunity to meet with and present a check to Children’s Miracle Network at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Donations acquired from partnerships such as ours along with other contributions and fundraising initiatives help provide patients with critical treatment across the state. For example, this hospital now has a neonatal medical transport service that has proven to be important in rural areas where smaller hospitals may not have the capability to deliver babies.

With the help of generous supporters, pediatric patients and their families are welcomed to a warm and comfortable environment should treatment require them to stay at the hospital for any period of time. Accommodations and services such as Child Life Specialists, an in-house salon, indoor and outdoor play areas, and a beautiful children’s theater are made possible thanks to donations provided by individuals, communities and organizations such as the Iowa Drug Card.

University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital ranks among the best according to Parent magazine’s top 20 children’s hospitals in the nation and the Iowa Drug Card team had the opportunity to participate in a guided tour.  Providing care to more than 140,000 children each year, UI Children’s Hospital has many features that allow their patients to have a comfortable yet unique experience during their stay. In addition to their private rooms, families have access to a children’s library, playground, meditation room and theater.

The magic doesn’t end there! Patients and families also have access to the top floors of the hospital where they have an exclusive view of the Hawkeye’s football stadium. Sounds incredible, right? Programs were rated by industry professionals across the following categories: Program Access, Program Benefits, Customer Support, Prescription Formulary List, Drug Discounts, and Network Coverage. Iowa Drug Card was launched April 12, 2008 and has saved Iowans more than $6 million on their prescription drugs.

A Louisana-based networking company has launched a program offering a statewide discount drug card for Iowa that's endorsed by former Iowa Hawkeyes head football coach Hayden Fry.

The Iowa Drug Card program (www.iowadrugcard.com), provides average savings of 30 percent on prescription costs and is accepted at more than 50,000 national and regional pharmacies around the country, according to a press release from Iowa Drug Card, which is not a state-sponsored program. The program is administered by United Networks of America, based in Baton Rouge, which has established similar discount programs in approximately 30 states with more than 28.2 million participants.

Among the participating pharmacies in Iowa are Kmart, Walgreen Co., CVS/pharmacy, Rite Aid Corp., Hy-Vee Inc. and many independent pharmacies, the company said. Users must either download a free card, or may access the program without a card by visiting any Kmart pharmacy, which is the program's preferred pharmacy.

The program is intended to help uninsured and underinsured residents afford their prescription medications, but can be used by people who have health insurance coverage with no prescription benefits or by those with plans that don't pay for name-brand drugs. "The people of Iowa need a program like this to help offset rising prescription costs," Fry said in the release.

Various companies are offering discount drug card programs, and Iowans should be careful when considering them, said Tom Temple, executive vice president of the Iowa Pharmacy Association.

"Where these programs typically fail is that they sometimes disrupt the relationship a person has with a pharmacy," he said. "That can have an adverse effect on the benefits a pharmacist can have." The best approach is to work with one pharmacist who maintains a complete personal medication history, and who may also provide access to discount programs, he said.

The card, a plant of the United Networks of Americas Freedrugcard.us campaign, will save Iowans up to 75 percent on prescription drugs, although the average savings is around 30 percent.

What youll save is on a prescription to prescription basis, said Jeff Faber, the pharmacist in-charge at the Hy-Vee Pharmacy in Le Mars. The drug companies and the pharmacy have contracted how much they'll allow to be discounted.

Those who qualify to use the Iowa Drug Card are as follows:

• Uninsured
• Underinsured
• Health insurance coverage with no prescription bene•б│ts
• Individuals who do not qualify for publicly funded programs such as Medicaid or Medicare
• Individuals who receive their medications through charity care providers such as 340B
• Those in the gap period of Medicare part D

Attaining the card is simple and completely free. Just visit iowadrugcard.com, type in your •б│rst and last name, and email address, then print the card. It can be used as many times as needed. The Iowa Drug Card has no age or income restrictions.

Although the Iowa Drug Card is a big help for purchasing prescription drugs, it is not a type of insurance.

The main reason this card is available is to help offset the rising prescription costs.

Prescription prices always seem to be on the rise, Faber said. Companies are always trying to make lower-priced generics, but physicians want to use newer drugs for their patients that work better. The problem is insurance companies might not want to pay for the newer, more expensive drugs, so this card will be a way to take the edge off the higher priced prescriptions.

The card can also be used by those who have prescription coverage, but dont have coverage for the speci•б│c drug they need.

This program is made possible through the support of pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies, said Ryan Jumonville, president and CEO of United Networks of America. The pharmacies have agreed to discount their medications...the (Iowa Drug Card) program is funded through a small administration fee worked out through agreements with pharmacies and rebates from drug companies.
